swl + swl = sw

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I have seen this put a number of ways but I’ll use this version. So what does swl + swl = sw mean?

It basically is short for “some will like + some won’t like = so what”

It goes to the fact that too many of us worry about what others will think about something we plan to do.
Whether it is losing weight, quit smoking. starting a business……whatever! So much of what we do or don’t do stems from our childhood. A time when we were told to “be careful”, “don’t do that you could hurt yourself” and any number of other limiting statements by our loving parents. In my case mt Dad would say “use your head for something other than a hair rack”. This usually came from me doing something HE thought was stupid or should have been done his way.

Most all of us have had our parents tell us thing like this. I know there are exceptions to this…..some of you had the perfect nurturing parents.

But for the rest of us we may limit our risk taking based on what others might think. When in doesn’t matter what others think! As long as what you are doing is legal, ethical, moral and does not inflict harm on others noone has the right to judge.

Here is an example using me….When I was growing up anything I did my Dad would judge as never good enough. It didn’t matter what it was, school, hobbies…He would tell me it could have been better this way or done like this or if I had studied harder.

This taught me that if I never finished anything he couldn’t judge it. So I started many things but would only that the project to the 90% finished level then start the next project. If you never finsh you can’t be judged.

So bottom line is I learned the hard way to make myself not only start something but to also finish it as well. Because you cannot worry about what others might think, you have to go for it anyway.

Have something you’re hesitant to start because of what people might think?

Apply SWL + SWL = SW and start it anyway!!!!

no lucky punch…..

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I love boxing…I enjoy watching it, I like training as a boxer because it is a great workout. I was listening to an interview with a current title holder about his next fight. He was talking about how he has been training and preparing mentally for the fight.

The person interviewing him asked something about how he can avoid a “lucky punch” by his opponent.

The fighter said there is no such thing as a lucky punch. He said if he knocks the other guy out or gets knocked out himself, it isn’t because of luck. It’s because of training and preparation and taking advantage of the opportunity to throw that punch.

This happens in life too….How many times have you heard people say someone suceeded because they were lucky. For get that that athlete trained for years. Or that business owner struggled for years getting his business off the ground.

This is how it is for all of us…..you don’t get something for nothing. You know like the ZZ Top song “money for nuthin” Sure there are the trust fund babies or someone wins the lottery.

But for those of us that do not fit into the above two examples, there is only preparation and focus. We prepare to be successful and stay focused on while we make the journey. And just like the Champion boxer that did not get to be Champion without training and preparation, we cannot succeed without focus and preparation.

So don’t just sit around waiting for your “lucky punch” get out there and make something happen.

Why Wakeup Breathing….

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I had this posted once but in a moment of “dain bramage” I deleted all my original posts. So I thought I would explain again how I came by the name of my site.

A number of years ago when someone in my life died it made me think about how fragile life is. I mean that at anytime anyone of us could have the lights go out or put out through no fault of our own.

So it made me think of how fortunate we are to have another day each morning when we wake-up. But that is all we are guaranteed, that day and nothing more. And many people only get that day…..

So since that time when people ask me how I am doing I always say “I woke-up breathing, thats all I ask”

So that’s where “Wake-up Breathing” comes from.

When we wake-up we get today to do whatever we can…..and we all have the chance to make our lives better in many ways. So tomorrow when you wake-up, make it a great day.

Go ahead..give up…………

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

“Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.”

I was at the gym this weekend and there are ALOT of people doing the New Year resolution “get my butt to the gym”.
But I have noticed a few less cars in the parking lot lately. I workout with a professional boxing trainer twice a week. It is a killer workout and I have said many times while working out “what the heck am I doing here???”

Did I want to quit at times….sure did! But I just kept going working past the quitting point you get during a workout sometime. I had my physical the other day and for a 54 year old guy I am in EXCELLENT shape according to my Doc.

I wasn’t able to achieve this by quitting when it gets hard and you won’t either. Yeah you got yourself looking like the Pilsbury doughboy, but it didn’t happen over night….and neither will getting in shape.

so take each day or workout as it comes. Work through that one and worry about the next one tomorrow. In notime you will see you have been going at it for weeks and the results are showing. So don’t quit!!!

You will be rewarded with a new physical you and a new mental you….

Persistence to change…

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Calvin Coolage said…

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

Once you realize this fact, making one or many changes in your life is very doable. Because if you persist it will happen.
It doesn’t matter what it is you want to change….if you are persistant everyday at making the change happen it will.

Just take a example we all can understand. You want to lose weight. So everyday you watch what you eat and do some exercise. You will lose some weight. But if you do it for a few days and decide it’s “to hard” and give up. You won’t lose the weight. It’s very simple…do the work and get the results.

So as in the quote….PRESS ON!
